It is imperative to implement efficient safety plans to protect your employees, and to devise certain written procedures and contracts that protect your workers when they enter confined spaces.

It is very important to first evaluate your workplace so as to determine whether confined spaces are safe or not. If not safe, it is your duty to inform your employees of the existence of hazards, and where they are located and what dangers they pose. Precautionary measures must be taken to stop your employees from entering such a space. Also, it is important to come up with safety measures for entrapment, hazardous atmospheric condition and engulfment.

Some of the most frequent dangers that most confined space workers come across are gas dangers. Confined spaces generally contain many toxic hazards that can only be detected through testing. Oxygen deficiency, carbon monoxide, methane and hydrogen sulfide are some of the common hazards found. It is important to rely on a portable gas detector instead of sense of smell. Some of the symptoms of exposure to hazardous gases include: eye inflammation, loss of consciousness and respiratory tract irritation. IN many cases, death is very common as well.
